Tackling Indigenous Smoking Community Connector

Full or Part Time Opportunity Available. Hours can be flexible with the ability to work school hours.

The Tackling Indigenous Smoking Worker (TISW) will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program across the following areas: Condobolin, Grenfell, Forbes, Cowra, Orange, Bathurst, Oberon, Portland, Lithgow, Dunedoo, Gulgong, Mudgee and any other relevant towns within the boundaries of this service area.

This is an Identified role under the Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role.

Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria:

  • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
  • is accepted as such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community

The Tackling Indigenous Smoking Worker (TISW) has the primary responsibility of:

  1. Collaborating with the Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service to plan, implement and evaluate TIS health promotion and community engagement programs
  2. Enhancing the capacity of Indigenous families and communities to tackle Indigenous smoking, understand smoking/vaping risks, and raise awareness of cessation as key to achieving health outcomes
  3. Developing and implementing local strategies to address smoking and vaping
  4. Establishing sustainable partnerships between Aboriginal communities and other agencies in research, monitoring, evaluation and dissemination of information related to TIS services
  5. Promoting TIS services by participating in community events & schools programs.

• Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (NB: applicants race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW)

• Travel within the Central West including, but not limited to, Condobolin, Grenfell, Forbes, Cowra, Orange, Bathurst, Oberon, Portland, Lithgow, Dunedoo, Gulgong, Mudgee and any other relevant towns within the boundaries of this service area.

• Demonstrated experience working within the health promotion, community development or public health field.

• Ability to take direction, determine priorities and manage workloads in order to meet agreed timelines and objectives.

• Ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their leaders, respecting culture, values and ways of doing business.

• Knowledge of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

• Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to uphold the principles of cultural safety including an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Orange Aboriginal Medical Service (OAMS) is making a difference to the health of Aboriginal families and the wider community of Central Western NSW. Commencing in 2005 with only a handful of staff members, OAMS has now expanded across 5 locations, providing a wide range of services to the whole community.
