COMMUNITY

OAMS believes that strong linkages to the community are essential for successful health outcomes and has built a range of health, education and career development programs linking with already established groups and organisations within the region.

LOCAL SCHOOLS

OAMS mentors young people with a desire to enter health related fields. Linkages with the local public & private high schools has seen OAMS host both Aboriginal & Non-Aboriginal students for work experience modules, fostering a passion for health in regional Australia.

In conjunction with a local public high school and TAFE, OAMS is hosting students in the 1 year school-based traineeship program in health related fields.

COONABAHLOO GIBIR (ABORIGINAL MEN’S GROUP)

Over several years OAMS has been working in collaboration with Coonabahloo Gibir to conduct ‘Healthy Activity’ programs with local Aboriginal men. This program includes, two days per week exercise training, nutrition classes and one day a week personal training.

In addition to this program, Coonabahloo Gibir and OAMS have collaborated on the implementation of the NSW Ministry of Health “Healthy Weight” state-wide community challenge for the past 2 years.

For the past year, Aboriginal women and Non-Aboriginal men and women are now participating in the program. To date our numbers for this program is averaging 20-25 people per night.

ANNUAL NAIDOC WEEK

OAMS has been the major sponsor of Orange NAIDOC Week activities for the past 5 years, our Aboriginal health staff being on the Naidoc Commiittee, organising the Annual March, participating in the Service Promotion Day, conducting an Open Day at our facility and assisting with various events throughout the entire week.
